Jeffrey Wright wins Best Lead Performance at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards for his role in American Fiction. Wright praises the decision of Ram Bergman and Rian Johnson to finance the film as an indie project when no one else would. This marks Wright’s first Spirit Awards win after being nominated two times prior.

At the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards, Jeffrey Wright took home the award for Best Lead Performance for his role in American Fiction. Wright expressed his gratitude for receiving the honor from presenter Colman Domingo, whom he admires. He reflected on his past experiences at the Spirit Awards and praised Muhamma Ali, whom he met at a previous event.

Wright delivered a heartfelt speech, joking about his previous feelings towards awards shows and how receiving an award changes his perspective. He credited Ram Bergman and Rian Johnson for financing American Fiction when nobody else was willing to take on the project. Wright also thanked his co-stars and the crew for their dedication to the film.

American Fiction was made independently despite its all-star cast, which includes Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, and Adam Brody. Wright’s win at the Spirit Awards marked his first victory after being nominated twice before for Basquiat and Broken Flowers. The event was livestreamed on Film Independent and IMDb’s YouTube channels.
